Our ReStore, previously located on Fir Avenue in Sand City, has been closed as we secured a new location and prepared the new space to use as our base of operations.
The new ReStore location will be in the old Barker Theater at Fort Ord, just off Lightfighter Drive. Though the official address is on Gigling Road, the actual building is beside the PX conveniently adjacent to a very large parking lot. And to make it more challenging, it’s not labeled on the usual internet map services.
The theater has a long history at Fort Ord, built in 1968 and used for many movie showings for 25 years. It was then deactivated in 1994 when Fort Ord was closed and there have been no occupants since then. Lots of locals remember seeing movies at Barker theater and one volunteer even commented “some of the chewing gum under a seat was probably mine!”
After a lengthy application process, Monterey Habitat obtained a lease for the Barker Theater in May 2015. We have spent the months since completing the extensive building upgrades required in order to again occupy the space. A partial list of the work includes: cleaning, painting, removal of the theater chairs (and transporting them to an Army storage depot), construction of platforms to level the floor for our ReStore space plus major plumbing and electrical repairs. We also installed solar panels and converted of over 75 lights to LEDs. In the auditorium alone this reduced the previous 300watt bulbs to 40 watt bulbs – much cooler plus less expensive.
We are now in the final stages of completing the required upgrades including the reactivation of the fire detection system plus other safety modifications.
Our hope is to open the ReStore again soon. When we can determine the date, we will announce it via email to our volunteers and donors plus through the local new media. The Barker Theater will also become the home for the Monterey Habitat programs and our office space.
All of this work could not have been accomplished without the on-going efforts of many licensed contractors and volunteers. We are very grateful for their tireless dedication and support throughout this process. We thank all our generous donors and loyal customers for their many words of support and kind patience while we worked to create a new and improved ReStore facility.
